Bayside Café Owner Faces Charges

Bellingham, Wash. -- The owner of the now closed Bayside Café in Bellingham’s Squalicum Harbor is being charged with pocketing sales tax and filing false returns.

The Washington Department of Revenue announced this week that 78-year-old James Alpha Brown got away with close to a quarter-million dollars or more in sales tax collected from patrons.

Officials say a state audit revealed Brown failed to accurately report his sales taxes from 2008 to 2012.

Mike Gowrylow of the Department of Revenue says Brown admitted he was having financial difficulties and used the money to pay employees, himself and family members.

Brown faces a possible maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

The Bayside Café closed suddenly last September.
