BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Part of the former Georgia-Pacific tissue warehouse on Bellingham’s waterfront is now the “Waterfront Innovation Zone: Technology Development Center.”
Governor Christine Gregoire is helping dedicate the center Monday at 2 p.m.
The $1.7-million project is a partnership between the Port of Bellingham, Western Washington University, and Bellingham Technical College, Port spokesperson Carolyn Casey said.
"A couple of years ago, the governor decided to create 'innovation zones' around the State of Washington as a way to have areas specialize to create new technologies and new materials that would help keep businesses in Washington State competitive," said Casey.
Western will use the Bellingham zone to create new technologies and materials, and BTC will train students in the new materials and technologies so they can enter the workforce with up-to-date knowledge, according to Casey.
State and federal grants paid for most of the costs, with the Port chipping-in $200,000.
