OLYMPIA, Wash. (Metro) -- Governor-elect Jay Inslee says the people of Washington have spoken on the issue of marijuana, and it's time for the federal government to "stand aside."
Outgoing Governor Christine Gregoire met earlier this week with a U.S. Department of Justice official to seek guidance on the issue after Washington voters approved a measure to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana for adults 21 and older.
When the measure takes effect on December 6, possession of marijuana for recreational use will still be a violation of federal law.
Inslee tells KING-TV the decision will not jeopardize national security or interstate commerce, and the federal government should allow Washington to move forward with it.
