Bellingham, Wash. (Metro) -- The father of a Western Washington University graduate who was mauled to death by an African lion says his daughter was thrilled to be working at an animal sanctuary in California.
Paul Hanson of Seattle says his 24-year-old daughter Dianna was an intern at Project Survival in Dunlap, California.
The owners of the exotic cat sanctuary say they don't know why Hanson was in the cage alone with the 350-pound lion.
The animal was killed by sheriff's deputies after it attacked Hanson.
They're investigating to see if safety protocols were followed.
Hanson was active in the local Bellingham community.
According to her facebook page she worked at the Mount Baker Ski Area in addition to studying and working at Western.
