Olympia Food Co-Op Pulls Israeli Products From Shelves

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Although our local food co-op isn’t following suit, the Olympia Food Co-Op says it has received hundreds of phone calls and e-mails from all over the world since it decided last week to boycott products from Israel.

All Israeli-made gluten-free crackers, ice cream cones and a moisturizing cream have been removed from the Olympia
co-op’s two stores.

General Manager of the Bellingham Food Co-Op Jim Ashby says they have no plans to boycott products from Israel.

“At our co-op, the only body that can make a decision about supporting a boycott is the board of directors,” said Ashby,

“And they can choose a range of responses, from simply posting information that a group is suggesting a boycott, to actually deciding to pull the products off the shelves.”

He says the local food co-op has only been asked to post information about boycotts once or twice in recent years.

The Olympia co-op has an active history of supporting boycotts, having also removed products from Norway and China from their shelves.

Olympia co-op spokesman Harry Levine says the Israel boycott is an attempt to compel Israel to respect Palestinian rights.

He says most of the comments have been positive.
