OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A new report on the Powell children slayings says that our state needs to do more to protect the children in its care. The report indicates the deaths of Charlie and Braden Powell could have been prevented if some facts about a case involving their father had been known. Josh Powell was suspected in his wife Susan's disappearance. But Chris Case with the DSHS Children's Administration says details on the case were sealed as part of the State of Utah's criminal investigation. She says in hindsight, the State needs to work more closely with law enforcement on cases involving children. Josh killed himself and his sons in an explosion and fire at their Graham home last February during what was to be a supervised visit. Attorneys are set to file a suit today over how social workers handled the case.
