Sears Closing, Sports Authority Moving In

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A long-standing major retailer in Bellingham will be going away early next year.

The Sears Store and Auto Center at Bellis Fair Mall is closing in late January.

The store currently has 92 employees.

Ken Oplinger with the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the company had announced it was having financial troubles and would be closing some stores earlier this year.

Mall officials say Sears will be replaced by a Sports Authority store late next year.

Oplinger says it's rare for a major retailer to close and have another retailer immediately move in behind them.
Sears had a store in downtown Bellingham before moving to the mall when it first opened in 1988.
