Washington's Higher Education Coordinating Board reports that employers all over the state are clamoring for more college graduates in a number of fields. At the same time the state continues to cut millions from higher education to help make up for budget shortfalls. Maybe it's time to examine tax breaks the state bestows on many businesses.
I'm not blaming businesses for the budget mess we're in, and it makes sense for any entity to take advantage of tax rules that benefit it. But some of these breaks were written into the tax code generations ago and don't reflect economic reality today.
The bottom line is that higher education is critical to our state's economy and businesses located here, and we need to make it easier, not harder, for state residents to have a chance to earn a degree.
Employers all over the state are clamoring for college educated persons in certain fields... Joe this isn't cause and effect, and todays budget cuts on college education have nothing to do with those whom are graduating. You see this problem started @ least four years ago, and probably 6years ago. The average college student takes five years to get a four year degree (when the feds took over the primary and secondary education it was just over four years). It is also not uncommon for a student to take quarters off 3 on average which adds another year. So, todays shortage is an indication of the non recruitment by the private sector, the big business not doing their due diligence and getting involved in future trends, and the government not having the foresight to anticipate what is needed and regulate accordingly. You see, you tried to hammer conservatives for wanting budget cuts. You didn't need to, and I can make the argument that it was big busines's fault and president Bush for not regulating the industry to fill the future needs of America. It all goes back to big business and republicans, lets beat them like a pinata.

That article cited the Elway poll and how 39% of those asked chose to close loopholes first. Unfortunately, it failed to cite the 56% of respondents who wanted to reduce spending. Obviously when we don't look any further than the first layer of a story we won't see what's really going on.
The state wants to raise revenue instead of cutting spending. The guy who wrote the article is a self-avowed beaurocrat aligning himself with the democratic party. Using that nugget of information I started checking his sources, and suprise he painted a different picture from the source of his statistics.

The task force recommends that the Commission..consider various criteria for reviews such as how the bond..funds will advance an institutions long-range plan for technology ..how the proposed connectivity and information technology will..advance the institutions instructional research and service economic..development missions how the institution will address technology..training needs and the source of revenue for matching funds.....Distance Learning..The task force indicates that enhancement of educational opportunities..through distance learning is dependent on a statewide integrated..infrastructure that supports voice video and data transfer and..facilitates joint degrees partnerships and flexibility in method..of delivery. Out-of-state institutions that offer courses..or programs via distance learning and have an established physical..presence in New Jersey also should be subject to those regulations...

Joe,
70,000 pages of tax code is insane. We do need fairer taxation=close the loopholes that allow a company like GE to make 5 billion in profits without paying a dime in taxes. If we lower the corporate tax rate, but close all of the loopholes, it will result in higher revenues. Also, those who make little should be paying something, even a nominal (2%) sum will give them ownership in the country's affairs. As it is, 50% of the population paying nothing, they see Gov't money as "free" and expect handouts. The top 2% of earners paid 19% of federal revenues in 1980. That has now doubled to 38%. I don't mind them paying high rates 40%+, but anything over that should be that they give a % of their income to charities of their choice. No American should ever be paying more than 50% of their income in taxes.

the 2 mouth bandit strikes again. "It's time to examine business tax breaks" BUT "I'm not blaming business for the budget mess we're in ", "Higher education is critical to our states economy" BUT "we need to charge local residents more to go to the local college, and give more spots to out of state students to get more revenue", "Higher education is critical to our states economy" BUT "Businesses here don't pay enough taxes, not regulated enough and they are evil, especially if they are non-union", "The state continues to cut millions from higher education to make up for budget shortfalls" BUT- this one is a 3 mouther, "more money means smarter students-sham" "Democrat government is so good at running things there should never be a budget shortfall", and "you washyourhandsingtons are not spending enough in this democrat labeled recovering economy, it's your fault you evil consumers that this democrat ran state are short on there budgets" Shame on you, now get out there and spend more of that money you do not have, GO,GO,GO democrats are depending on you.

This report contains a lot of useful information regarding state support of higher education in public institutions both nationally and state-by-state. The data analysis take into account a number of variations state to state in cost of living mix of types of educational institutions etc. The first shows the growth of public education FTE enrollment over the past 25 years and compares that to state and local educational appropriations and total educational revenue per FTE over the same period.

It's really too bad, the negative impacts of this "increase of freedom" that the tea party has been fighting for won't be felt for years. But when we do look around and wonder what went wrong, why did we let this happen, it won't be hard to figure out.Greed.

I'd like to ask some fine folks here if they got their Living Family Wage Jobs right outta High School or what. How their education was funded. And what they have against those who want to make better lives for themselves.

Barncat, if I would've went into the apprentice program at the shipyards right out of highschool, I would be making over 100k today. I went to college on academic scholarships and worked part time, and the montogomery gi bill. I have a degree, I am not faulting or going against anyone who wants to go to college. But this bleeding heart "think of the children rhetoric from progressives and liberals doesn't hold water, if the progressive/liberals want to pay for childrens education, and they have the means then let them, Bill Gates could pay for every student in the state of washington's college there is no law stopping him, so the converse of that should also be true, we do not need a law or more taxes to pay for their education.
Ever notice that greenhouse tomatoes or any other fruit or vegitable grown in a controlled environment look like they should but do not quite taste as good as the ones that have been through a little heat, a little rain and some wind. We can have greenhouse kids, but they will never be the worldchangers that our parents and grandparents were. Because all the info is at their fingertips, and the only hardships they have faced is when their fomer bff unfriended them on fb or their favorite singer got voted off the tv. A bit of adversity is a good thing, an unfair playing field, well that is criminal, and the burdens put on the working class families in America are getting close to that borderline.

I purposely put off college for the longest time thinking it would just be an extension of high school, that was back in 1993, things didn't improve from there. Entry level hell jobs, sure they may build character but there can be such a thing as too much character lol. Just over a year ago I gave in and admitted I just couldn't do the kid stuff anymore. Where I didn't wanna be wanted me too much, wanted me to death really, age and health almost had me pinned down in there as well. Now I'm finally IN College and hoping that this money Obama's loosened up for me helps me outta the much. It's not a handout, it's a hand up. I don't much Care for where the money comes from as long as it's enough to help those who want and need to be helped. So for those who say "don't fund higher education" it seems to become clear to me where they want the rest of us.

No sir, or ma'am, I want the best for you and everyone whose path I cross, I am struggling, and I cannot afford any added expenses, there are others who are in that same situation, I hope that you barncat become the brilliant mind economist that we need to fix the debt, or the researcher whom finds the cure for cancer, ya' see, most people especially conservatives don't wish ill towards others, we have unfortunately been painted into a corner where we have to fight for our survival, and as george clooney stated in oh' brother where art though, "I'm for yours truly" then John T. Said, " I'm for yours truly too" then delbert said, " well, Im with you fella's" because of our sound bite society, honest diologue is gone, we are reduced to choosing sides and preparing to defend our position, with the removal of proper names, and the hiding behind 'screen names' we are becoming a society even further removed from each other, I wish you well, and hope that your character is as developed as your brain will be. later.

So, BC made some dubious decisions in his life, and now he expects us to pay for it. Does that about sum it up?
Run along BC and go get your "Obama money" maybe he still has some in "his stash" for ya.

Wow, that was certainly f#%&ed up sounding, read or spoken out loud, lol. Was that kinda ad homynous looking or what? Maybe even personal attack-ish. Thanks Ryan, that kinda stuff just ends up losing ya some footing. It's a slip-up, it happens. So I'll be fair and stoop a level or two down to eye level for ya.:
Ya ready? Okay here goes. ;)
Why don't You go back to your few dozen large Re Party Rally, tell em what a big bad Wit you were over here, that you managed to squeeze in a few tireless ringwingnut parrotisms and collect your tea kettle sticker with the feeling of pride of a job well done? {I think DWB now has some competition!} :D
Now, is that all you got or do you have an actual anecdote or opinion on the topic itself? :) Or are we determined to impress Jacque even further by jumping in with our own two one-sided non-cents?
