WHATCOM, Wash. (Metro) -- Unemployment is up slightly in Whatcom County despite some encouraging signs.
Joblessness in the county last month was 7.7 percent, up from a revised rate of 7.4 percent in July.
Elizabeth Court with the state Employment Security Department says even though 400 local jobs were lost in August, the number of people working slightly increased in Whatcom County.
Manufacturing and construction jobs increased in August, while government jobs were shed.
Still, the jobless numbers are quite a bit better than they were one year ago.
In August of last year, Whatcom County's unemployment rate stood at 8.3 percent.
