Whatcom Community College has received a $200,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to train local high school students on cyber security.
The grant will help fund a 2-year project to develop cyber security camps.
Linda Maier with WCC says the camps will bring 24 high-school students to Whatcom for a six-month information security training program.
“They’ll look at the components of a network, they will look at an operating system, virtualization, web applications, vulnerabilities, and then it will culminate in a cyber defense competition,” said Maier.
She says the students will be working with a nationally recognized cyber security expert.
Recent attacks on computer networks have highlighted the nation-wide need for a trained cyber security labor force.
