Free Admission: Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

Saturday, September 27th 2014 - All Day

U.S. Forest Service is waiving fees at National Forest-operated recreation day-use fee sites, including Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest for National Public Lands Day (September 27th). (These sites normally require a $5 fee per vehicle or recreation pass)

The next Free Day is Veterans Day weekend (November 8th-11th).

Whatcom County’s Alternative Humane Society holds a Pet Adoption Event the last Saturday of every month at Pet Palace Consignment.  It’s your chance to meet furry friends who are looking for their forever home!

TED Talk Tuesday

On the first Tuesday of each month Bellingham’s Explorations Academy presents a free screening of TED* talks–addressing a specific topic (like diversity, invention, neighborhoods, etc.) followed by an open discussion of the impact of that topic on our local community. The purpose of TED Talk Tuesday is to facilitate nonsectarian and nonpartisan discourse on important subjects.

Deadline: 2014 “Peaceful Poetry” Youth Contest

Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center invites local students (K-12) to submit poems (30 lines or less) for the 2014 Peaceful Poetry Youth Contest. Potential themes include, but are not limited to: resolving conflict, talking things out, apologizing, listening, tolerance, building peace, alternatives to violence, respect, peer mediation and bullying. 

The submission deadline is October 10th: www.whatcomdrc.org.

(For educators who are interested in submitting poems from a class or group, Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center has developed a thirty-minute curriculum. This short lesson includes an overview of poetry styles, a vocabulary brainstorm and time for students to write and submit their poems. Educators are encouraged to contact youth@whatcomdrc.org for the free lesson plan)

You’re invited to sign up now for the third annual earthquake and tsunami drill in October–Great Washington ShakeOut–and to plan ShakeOut activities.

The focus of Great Washington ShakeOut is a statewide “Drop, Cover, Hold On” earthquake drill and–for coastal jurisdictions–a tsunami siren test that demonstrates the importance of emergency preparedness at home, school and the workplace. As part of the tsunami siren test, coastal schools will practice evacuation procedures; coastal residents are encouraged to do the same.
