Bellingham National Art Exhibition & Awards is a juried exhibition, featuring artworks in a variety of media–including video, photography, ceramics, mixed media, paintings and more. Representing artists from 16 states, including Washington, the exhibition includes 101 pieces from more than 60 artists. They’re on display through September 6th.

The exhibition includes a popular choice award of $500, offering the community an opportunity to give their feedback on the artworks. Votes can be cast at the exhibition through August 2nd. The popular choice winner will be announced at the Lightcatcher building during Downtown Art Walk August 7th.

IMPORTANT: Department of Natural Resources reports fire danger for the Northwest Region (Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, Island, and San Juan Counties) has been upgraded to “VERY HIGH.” 


Bellingham is on the following Voluntary Outdoor Watering Schedule through September 15th:

Residents at even-numbered addresses are requested to water only Tuesdays, Thursdays and/or Saturdays.

Residents at odd-numbered addresses are requested to water only Wednesdays, Fridays and/or Sundays.

All residents are asked to refrain from outdoor watering Mondays–to allow the city’s reservoirs to recharge.

(The voluntary watering schedule does not apply to drip irrigation systems; handheld watering methods; flower and vegetable gardens; outdoor potted plants and hanging baskets; newly planted lawns)

Bellingham “Tree Tour” And Reception

Dendrologist (and author of Tree Map Of Broadway Park) John Wesselink will lead a Tour of Bellingham’s Broadway Park, followed by a Reception at The Roeder Home. More than forty unique species of native and non-native trees are growing in the park! The tour will highlight some of the more unusual specimens.

Afterward, Whatcom Parks And Recreation Foundation will host a reception (7:30pm) at Roeder Home, which will be open for self-guided tours, as well. You’re invited to bring a blanket and a picnic dinner to enjoy on the grounds!

Opportunity Council is holding their annual School Backpack Drive for local children in need! Backpacks are needed for children at every grade level. (Larger sized, study backpacks are especially needed) Alternately, your financial gift will help purchase school supplies and pay activity fees for students in need. Donations will be collected August 5th at the Opportunity Council and at the Bellingham Walmart store (4420 Meridian Street).

Call for Artists: Mount Vernon “Community Hang-Up”

Thursday, August 6th 2015 - All Day

All artists–age 16 or older–are invited to submit one work of art for the Downtown Mount Vernon First Thursday Art Walk (August 6th). The “Community Hang-Up” will celebrate the community’s talent–with a $250 cash award presented to the winner of the People’s Choice Award.

Art media accepted include painting, drawing, sculpture, fiber, prints, photography, ceramics and mixed media. Your work should not exceed 30” in any direction (including mat and frame), and should be professionally presented, ready for hanging. This non-juried exhibit is limited to the first 35 participants on a first come, first served basis. There’s a $20 entry fee per person.
