Deadline: 2014 “Peaceful Poetry” Youth Contest

Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center invites local students (K-12) to submit poems (30 lines or less) for the 2014 Peaceful Poetry Youth Contest. Potential themes include, but are not limited to: resolving conflict, talking things out, apologizing, listening, tolerance, building peace, alternatives to violence, respect, peer mediation and bullying. 

The submission deadline is October 10th: www.whatcomdrc.org.

(For educators who are interested in submitting poems from a class or group, Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center has developed a thirty-minute curriculum. This short lesson includes an overview of poetry styles, a vocabulary brainstorm and time for students to write and submit their poems. Educators are encouraged to contact youth@whatcomdrc.org for the free lesson plan)

“Great Washington ShakeOut”

You’re invited to sign up now for the third annual earthquake and tsunami drill in October–Great Washington ShakeOut–and to plan ShakeOut activities.

The focus of Great Washington ShakeOut is a statewide “Drop, Cover, Hold On” earthquake drill and–for coastal jurisdictions–a tsunami siren test that demonstrates the importance of emergency preparedness at home, school and the workplace. As part of the tsunami siren test, coastal schools will practice evacuation procedures; coastal residents are encouraged to do the same.

The evening will also feature a tour of the thriving Whatcom Middle School garden; live music and fun, food-related activities.
