About 25 percent of the school’s 230 students are Hispanic.

Des Jarlais says they want all their students to be able to speak and write in Spanish so they can be competitive in the future job market.

Assumption Catholic School opened in 1913 with 130 students and still stands at its original location on Cornwall Avenue in Bellingham.

There will be multiple events next month celebrating the 100th anniversary and the school is planning to have special events each month during its centennial.
