BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Bellingham Mayor Kelli Linville says the city will focus more attention and resources on the downtown core after a recent series of burglaries at local businesses.

There’s been a string of 15 burglaries downtown since late August that all appear to be related.

Bellingham Police Chief Cliff Cook says there were 8 commercial burglaries just in this month.

Additional police patrols downtown are planned for the holiday season.

Linville says there is funding for new police officers in the 2014 budget and she has convened a workgroup to come up with public health and safety solutions. She expects this group to produce an action plan by January 2014.

“Many exciting and positive things are happening in our community and in our city center,” she said. “The vision of this group is to understand our challenges and look for opportunities and solutions.”
