BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Bellingham Police report there has been a major spike in home burglaries this month, more than double than last July.

The burglaries appear to be concentrated in the Alabama Hill area between Barkley and Iowa Street and as far as west as Iron Street.

Officer Mark Young says a number of these burglaries may have been preventable.

Seven out of ten garages burglarized this month were left unlocked and over half of the homes had doors that were left unlocked.

Young says it is important to make sure all doors and windows are locked at all times.
