OLYMPIA, Wash. – There’s a move in the Legislature to limit permits for trucks carrying oversized loads.
Spokane Senator Michael Baumgartner has introduced a measure that would deny travel permits for a load that exceeds the height or width of the minimum clearance on its route.
A semi with an oversized load struck overhead crossbeams on the I-5 bridge over the Skagit River last week, sending a section of the bridge and three vehicles into the water.
Baumgartner says the state transportation department shouldn’t issue permits for trucks that are larger than the bridges they cross.
