Orcas Island, Wash. – A broken underwater cable has left many people on the San Juan Islands with no way to communicate with the outside world.
San Juan County Emergency Management Director Brendan Cowan says the break has left residents on Orcas, Shaw and Lopez islands without regular 9-1-1 service.
He says people on those islands should contact their local fire department on their land lines for any emergencies.
People on Orcas Island can call 376-2331, and people on Shaw and Lopez islands can call 468-2991.
9-1-1 service on San Juan Island is working normally.
CenturyLink has divers in the area working to fix the cable, but don’t yet know what caused it to break.
Cowan says they hope to have the problem at least temporarily fixed by today.
