BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Bellingham Technical College is receiving a $2.75 million federal grant to help expand its nursing education program.

Vice President of Instruction Carol Lager says the money will make it easier for students to become a registered nurse.

She says BTC will recruit veterans and other unemployed or underemployed workers.

A recent report by the state Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board found that by 2017, Washington State will only be training 87 percent of the people needed to work in healthcare.

Representative Rick Larsen announced the grant this week, saying it will help Washington train enough nurses to overcome the projected shortage.
