Burglar stopped by homeowner

KGMI News Reporting
By Mike Curtiss

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A Bellingham woman stopped a burglary at her home on Eldridge Avenue Thursday.

The homeowner says she heard someone remove a screen and crawl through a back window.

The suspect fled when she made eye contact with him.

She was able to provide a detailed description of the suspect.

Police arrested 55-year-old Larry Heggem who was found hiding in some blackberry bushes two blocks away from the home.

Heggem has a history of residential burglary.

Police spokesperson Mark Young says one of the best things a homeowner can do to stop a burglar is to let them know they are calling 911.

Young says it is a good idea to use window screens because they make noise when removed and can alert people that someone is breaking in.
