BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Retailers performed well in Bellingham and Whatcom County in the first quarter of the year.
Kim Schmanke with the Washington State Department of Revenue says Whatcom County and Bellingham both had an almost 6 percent increase in taxable retail sales compared to last year’s first quarter sales.
New and used car sales, apparel, and home and gardening supplies brought in the most money in Whatcom County.
In Bellingham the most dominant sales came from new and used car sales, apparel, hotels and restaurants.
Statewide, retail sales have nearly recovered to pre-2008 recession levels, rising 8 percent to $26 billion.
