BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The number of Canadian shoppers crossing into Whatcom County has quadrupled since 2007.

Western Washington University’s Border Policy Research Institute estimates 310,000 cars crossed the border in July, four times more than in July 2007, the last time they did the survey.

Associate Director David Davidson says they surveyed Canadian visitors and found nearly half said they came here to shop.

Just 19 percent said they came across the border for shopping in 2007.

Davidson says they found the frequency of shopping trips increased, with 60 percent of non-NEXUS travelers saying they cross once a month.

More than half of NEXUS cardholders say they cross the border at least once a week.
