BELLINGHAM,Wash. – Senator Maria Cantwell visited with Whatcom County farmers yesterday, urging bipartisan passage of a long-term farm bill.
In the past, the farm bill has provided grant money for research on agricultural pests and diseases, helping farmers yield better crops.
Berry farmer Jon Maberry says he is glad Cantwell is on their side and advocating for them in Congress.
He says they need research to continue so Whatcom County farmers can increase crop production.
The farm bill is the main source of funding for agricultural research projects.
It also helps increase exports for berry growers.
Washington State is the third largest agriculture exporter in the U.S.
