SUMAS, Wash. – Several robbery suspects have been caught red-handed after trying to hide from police by re-painting their car, but forgetting to remove the license plates.

Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks says the three suspects stole a pickup truck in Everett Saturday and then ditched it for a sports car with out of state license plates.

Thinking police had caught up with him the next day, 22 year-old Westley French led Deputies on a high speed chase toward Sumas and made a getaway.

The suspects quickly spray painted the green car black.

Border Patrol agents caught up with them in the parking lot of Nooksack Valley High School six hours later.

Two of the three had black paint on their hands and the same license plates were on the car.

French is charged with eluding police and is facing robbery charges.

The other two suspects have been charged with first-degree robbery.

Parks admits this is one of most bizarre cases he’s seen.
