Century old message in a bottle washes ashore Vancouver Island

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A man on Vancouver Island has found a message in a bottle that he claims was written by a man who was traveling to Bellingham more than a century ago.

Steve Thurber from Courtenay, Canada, found the sealed green glass bottle on the shore of Schooner’s Cove in Tofino.

The note inside appears to have been written on September 29, 1906, by Earl Willard from San Francisco.

It may be the oldest message in a bottle ever found.

Thurber says he refuses to open the bottle because it is a historic artifact.

He says Willard was traveling to Bellingham by ship when he tossed the bottle into the ocean.

Records show that a man named Earl Willard got married in Bellingham in 1907 before moving to Vancouver.

Thurber is currently trying to make contact with any of Willard’s living relatives, and is in the process of getting the bottle checked out by historians.
