City buys land to speed up new development

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The City of Bellingham is set to buy 33 acres of land to help speed up development along West Bakerview Road.

The Bellingham Herald reports it’s the same area west of Northwest Avenue that Costco is considering as a new, bigger location for their Bellingham store.

Public Works Director Ted Carlson says they will take that land and use it for storm water facilities and wetlands mitigation.

Satisfying environmental regulations would speed up the process for private developers applying to build in the area.

The sale is under final review before an August 15 closing deadline.

The city council approved the purchase in a closed-door meeting last week.
