BIRCH BAY, Wash. – U.S. Coast Guard crews from Bellingham and Port Angeles responded to reports of a kayaker in the water near Birch Bay last night.

A witness called the Coast Guard at about 8:00 p.m. after seeing a man’s kayak flip over.

Air and boat crews were diverted to the scene from a training exercise.

The aircrew hoisted the man into a helicopter and transferred him to EMT’s waiting for him at Bellingham International Airport.

He was suffering mild hypothermia.

The Coast Guard warns all paddlers to dress for cold water and wear a brightly colored life jacket to increase their visibility.
