BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Council may reconsider paying for a project that would allow Costco and several other large businesses to move in north of Bakerview Road along Interstate 5.
Council member Sam Crawford says he feels that if the county helps pay for a new storm water treatment facility, they would be enabling development that would drastically increase traffic in the area.
Crawford says he may ask the council to change its unanimous vote to give the City of Bellingham $2.5 million for the project, and adds that the county has not signed the check yet.
He says the city and county need to have a better discussion about the long-term solutions for traffic in the area.
County Council member Barbara Brenner has called the city’s current plans to increase traffic capacity at Bakerview and I-5 a “band-aid.”
