BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Council has delayed a decision on whether to use economic development tax money on low-income housing projects.

Council member Sam Crawford supports the delay.

He says he’d rather have the money go toward providing incentives for building more single-family homes.

He says the Economic Development Investment Program is meant to be used for infrastructure, not more subsidized rentals.

For now, the money can only be used for loans to help homeowners pay for impact fees and utility hook-up charges.

The council has not set a date for when they will reconsider adding low-income rental projects to the EDI Program.
