BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Prosecutor says officers did the right thing when they shot two robbery suspects on the Mount Baker Highway August 8.

Attorney David McEachran says officers did not use their weapons until the suspects crashed their car in a roundabout on Mount Baker Highway near Smith road.
The driver, Pastor Lopez-Franco got out of the car and began firing at police with a sawed-off shotgun.
Officers shot Lopez-Franco in the stomach.
He is recovering at Harborview Medical center in Seattle.
The second suspect, Rafael Martinez-Garza, was treated for a gunshot wound to his arm and transported to Whatcom County Jail.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, the Washington State Patrol and the Lynden Police Department have all agreed it was necessary for responding officers to use deadly force.
