WASHINGTON, DC. – First District U.S. Representative Susan DelBene is looking to raise awareness of what it means to be poor in America.
The freshman congresswoman is living for one week on a food-stamp budget of roughly $4.50 per day, which is about $31 dollars per week.
DelBene says she’s doing it to stand up for families, children, and seniors who rely on nutrition assistance programs, and she wants to ensure the safety net is adequately funded.
She’s one of 26 members of Congress participating in the challenge to protest proposed cuts to the federal food stamp program.
