BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A trooper is lucky to be alive after a distracted driver hit his parked patrol car on the freeway in Bellingham.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary says Trooper Dave Hintz was doing paperwork and checking vehicle speeds near the Western Washington University northbound exit when he was struck by a pick-up truck early yesterday morning.
Leary says the driver, Thomas Denman was reaching for coffee and drifted off the road where he hit Hintz.
Hintz was taken to PeaceHealth Saint Joseph Medical center for neck pain and was released that same morning.
Charges are pending against Denman.
