Draw for Sounders and Red Bull NY at CenturyLink

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – Tim Cahill’s second-half tally saved a point for
Red Bull New York on Sunday as the Eastern Conference leaders battled to a 1-1
draw with Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field.

A win for the visiting side would have allowed the Red Bulls to become the
first team in MLS to clinch a playoff berth, but it was the home team that
earned the breakthrough on the stroke of halftime.

United States international Brad Evans was the catalyst for Seattle’s goal as
he whipped a cross into the penalty area from the right flank that struck the
hand of New York defender Marcus Holgersson, resulting in a penalty kick.

Evans then finished the sequence by smashing it into the bottom right corner
for his fourth goal of the campaign.

New York created several quality scoring chances but it took until the final
quarter-hour to find an equalizer when Seattle’s backline left Cahill unmarked
in the box and the Australia international buried it with a curling strike into
the top left corner.

Seattle went on the hunt for a late winner as the fourth official’s board
showed four minutes of stoppage time, but the Red Bulls defensive unit held
firm to escape with a valuable road point.

The result sees New York jump back into pole position for the Supporters’
Shield with 52 points, while the Sounders pull even with Real Salt Lake atop
the West with 51 points.
