Elderly man, dog dead after house fire

AP News

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – An elderly Whatcom County man and one of his dogs were found dead after a weekend house fire.

Fire District 14 Chief Jerry DeBruin says neighbors called 911 after hearing explosions early Saturday.

DeBruin says a man believed to be the homeowner was found dead at the scene, along with a dog.

Several other dogs were taken in by neighbors.

The man’s name had not been confirmed.

The fire chief says the man’s oxygen tanks are the likely cause of the explosions and are the focus of the investigation.

Whatcom County Medical Examiner Gary Goldfogel says the man had been known to smoke while using oxygen.
