FERNDALE, Wash. – The family and friends of a Ferndale teen who died from cancer last summer have organized an event this weekend to help find a cure for childhood cancer.
Makayla Nicolaas loved to play basketball and compete in summer 3-on-3 tournaments.
Ferndale Girls Basketball Association is hosting a 3-on-3 in Makayla’s name.
The association’s president John Cruikshank says it’s their way of honoring her memory.
The first-annual Makayla’s Street Jam 3-on-3 is this Saturday and Sunday at the Boys and Girls Club of Ferndale on Cherry Street and Second Avenue.
Proceeds will go to the Ben Towne Pediatric Cancer Research Center.
Cruikshank says they plan on holding this event for many years to come and hope to expand it to include more tournaments.
