BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Shoppers at Sunset Square in Bellingham may get a new gas station to go along with a new grocery store.

Safeway has requested a permit to build a 12 pump gas station at the entrance to Sunset Square, where Prime Tune and Brakes now sits.

The grocery store chain wants to remodel and take over the old Cost Cutter store.

To build the gas station, Safeway will have to tear down the car repair shop and install two underground fuel storage tanks.

The city is accepting written comments on the proposed gas station until December 30.
