WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – A union spokesperson says a possible strike by grocery workers will not affect stores in Whatcom County.

Tom Geiger with the UFCW 21 union says it’s an issue for union workers whose contracts have expired.

Contract negotiations and strike authorization votes affect workers whose contracts have already expired.

They include workers at Fred Meyer, QFC, and Safeway in Snohomish, Kitsap, King, and Pierce counties.

The union committee and grocery stores have tried to negotiate a new contract since March.

Union members with expired contracts voted 98 percent in favor of a strike authorization last week.
