BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A man has been hospitalized after crashing his truck into a railroad crossing during a high speed chase with police.

Lynden Police Chief Jack Foster says an officer pulled over Chase A. Newman from Ferndale for an expired license plate tab around 4:30 a.m.

As the officer approached the truck, Newman sped off leading the officer on a high speed chase.

Sumas Police assisted in the pursuit by laying spikes on East Badge Road near Van Buren Road.

The strip punctured one tire on the truck, but did not stop it.

Newman crashed into the railroad crossing at E. Badger and Garrison Road flipping his truck and catching the truck on fire.

Newman was pulled from the vehicle.

He has been flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life threatening injuries.

Washington State Patrol is investigating.

It is believed alcohol may have been a factor.

A temporary railroad crossing guard will be installed at the intersection.
