BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Federal extended unemployment benefits are going away in two weeks.
Sheryl Hutchison with the Employment Security Department says about 25,000 people in Washington State, including about 600 hundred people in Whatcom County will lose the extra benefits on December 28.
Congress created the program in 2008 and has extended it eleven times.
Republicans in Congress refused to extend the benefits as part of a budget deal and Democrats didn’t push for it.
