WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The jobless rate in Whatcom County dropped again last month.
Regional economist Anneliese Vance-Sherman says the county unemployment rate for April is down to 6.9 percent.
The county’s jobless rate is trending down at about the same rate as the entire state.
Vance-Sherman says much of the growth statewide is coming from more urban counties like King and Snohomish and is lagging in rural counties.
She says while the unemployment rate looks encouraging on the surface, there is still what she calls, “the phenomenon of the discouraged worker.”
She says the number of people employed and those actively looking for work has gone down significantly in the last several months.
