BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In 2012, 15.4 million family and friends provided over 17 billion hours of unpaid care to those with Alzheimer’s.
Bellingham resident Betsy Gross’ husband John was diagnosed with early onset at the age of 59.
That was 11 years ago.
Betsy says you would not wish this disease on your worst enemy.
More than 60 percent of Alzheimer’s caregivers rate the emotional stress of caring for their loves ones as high or very high.
One-third report symptoms of depression due to the physical and emotional toll of care giving.
Bestsy says you have to learn to not be frustrated and angry all the time.
Betsy she says she has learned to play a pour hand… well.
Betsy suggests building a life around things that are fulfilling so the disease doesn’t take over.
