WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. -The largest mentoring organization in Whatcom and Skagit counties is closing at the end of the month.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Washington has been struggling financially for a long time.
Executive Director Colleen Haggerty says their organization has helped about 6,000 children locally over the last 37 years.
She says they currently have 70 children paired with mentors.
There were several kids on the waiting list who will not get a big brother or big sister.
Recent appeals for donations, aggressively applying for grants and an added event weren’t enough to meet the non-profit’s rising costs.
Haggerty says the board of directors ultimately decided that their funding model was not sustainable.
