Local Democratic party causes stir with coal terminal resolution

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – The Whatcom County Democrats have caused quite a stir over a recent resolution they passed in July in support of the Lummi Nation’s position on the proposed Cherry Point terminal.

One section reads, “We propose and support the rejection of all industrial, commercial and residential uses of the remaining natural lands and waters…”

Party Chair Mike Estes says it’s meant to be inflammatory.

The resolution has caused somewhat of a rift between local Democrats and their usual industrial union supporters.

The majority of county Democrats have voiced strong opposition to the Gateway Pacific Terminal, which would ship coal and other bulk commodities to Asia.
