BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A local longshoreman is saying that Bellingham’s waterfront should continue to be used for heavy industry.

Daren Williams told the Bellingham Port Commission on Tuesday that the waterfront is already developed for heavy industry, and that is something you can’t find anywhere else in Whatcom County.

The current waterfront master plan calls for a mix of uses.

Williams says Whatcom County has plenty of undeveloped waterfront land that can be used for parks, but no other land is equipped for industry like the former Georgia Pacific site.

People who spoke in favor of more public access at Tuesday’s public hearing told the commission that local taxpayers didn’t agree to pay millions of dollars to clean up after GP only to let the waterfront be used for more heavy industry.
