BELLINGHAM, Wash. -The Mount Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross has been very busy this year.

Stacy Rice with the local Red Cross says they usually respond to a large number of house fires during the winter when people are using heaters and candles, but this year they are responding to a larger number of apartment fires during the warmer months.

Rice says donations often go down during the times of the year when there are less large-scale disasters to grab people’s attention.

Play Stacy Rice on local need

The Red Cross often helps people who can’t stay in their homes due to a fire or other disaster by paying for several nights in a hotel.

All of the services that the Red Cross provides are paid for with donations from the community.
