FERNDALE, Wash. – A local senator has received what he calls a ‘troublesome letter’ from the Department of Ecology about the scope of its environmental review of the proposed shipping terminal at Cherry Point.
Sen. Doug Ericksen of Ferndale sent a letter to the department expressing his concern, and they sent a letter back, stating that there is no state law that restricts lead agencies from considering issues outside of their jurisdictions.
Ericksen says the scope of review sets a precedent that could keep businesses from wanting to bring export operations to Washington.
He says the state depends heavily on exports and the scope could have a ‘chilling effect’ on the local economy.
Two separate environmental reviews will be done by the Department of Ecology and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
They are expected to be completed in about two years.
