WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Several local city and Whatcom County wastewater treatment plants have earned state awards for meeting or exceeding quality standards this year.

The City of Bellingham, Birch Bay, Lynden and Ferndale’s treatment plants all received the award for the second year in a row.

Whatcom County Water District no. 13 won the award for the first time this year.

Water quality specialist Mark Henderson with the Washington Department of Ecology says the award proves that these operators are doing the best job possible to treat wastewater.

To get the “Outstanding Wastewater Treatment Plant Award,” the plants had to pass all environmental tests, analyze all required samples, turn in all state reports and avoid any permit violations in 2012.

About one-third of Washington State’s sewer treatment plants won the award.
