FERNDALE, Wash. – The federal government has approved trust status for 80 acres of land owned by the Lummi Nation near Slater Road and I-5.
For now, there are no immediate plans for the land. The City of Ferndale has worked with the tribe for two years since they applied for trust status.
Ferndale Mayor Gary Jensen hopes they can come up with a solution for the land that will make up for lost property tax revenue.
He says what happens with this land is key to the growth of Ferndale as development continues on the I-5 corridor.
A 10-acre section of the site is within the Ferndale city limits and zoned for ‘regional retail.’
