Lynden wins 2A State Championship

Alex Otano-Guenther’s 40 yard field goal late in the fourth quarter gave Lynden a 38-28 lead and sealed the 2A Football State Championship, as the Lions defeated the Tumwater Thunderbirds at the Tacoma Dome.

Jaremy Martin’s two rushing touchdowns helped build Lynden’s 35-13 second half lead. Martin finished with 90 yards rushing. Tumwater responded with two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Jaden Croft, cutting the Lion lead to 35-28.

Lynden recovered the Thunderbirds onside kick at their own 45, drove to the Tumwater 23 and stalled. Lynden’s head coach Curt Kramme elected to kick a 40 yard goal and Otano-Guenther’s successful kick gave the Lions a two-possesion lead with under two minutes remaining.

The Lions finished with 445 yards of Total Offense. Lynden quarterback Sterling Somers finished with 263 yards with one touchdown on 16-21 passing. Scooter Hastings lead the Lion receivers with four catches for 113 yards and one touchdown.
