BELLINGHAM, Wash. – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mount Baker Imaging in Bellingham is holding its tenth annual Mammography Outreach Party this Friday as a way to remind women to get screened.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women 40 and older get a mammogram and breast exam every year.

National breast cancer expert Dr. Phil Evans says mammography saves lives.

He says the breast cancer death rate in the U.S. has dropped more than 30 percent over the last 20 years thanks to mammograms.

Evans says women with a strong family history of breast cancer should start routine mammograms before age 40.

The mammography party is Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Mount Baker Imaging on Northwest Avenue.

Doctors will be on hand to answer questions about breast cancer screening and its importance.

Women who participate will also have the chance to get a mammogram without a prior appointment.
