Man wounded in shootout with police

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A man is hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds after firing at officers in a shooting at the Villa Inn on Samish way last night.

Bellingham Police Chief Clifford Cook and Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo have released a joint statement calling the shooting an attempted murder of police officers.

Two officers arrived at a room at the motel around 5:00 p.m. to serve a mental health pick-up order.

The 54-year-old man pulled out a shotgun and fired at officers, who returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.

No one else was injured.

A swat team in training responded to the scene along with Bellingham Police Officers and Whatcom County Sheriff’s Deputies.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
